Photo Formats and Features

FeatureSupport in Picman 1.1.0
Common image formatsJPEG/JPG/JPE, PNG, GIF, WebP, BMP and TIFF/TIF.
Additional recognized formatsHEIC, HEIF, AVIF and camera RAW: DNG, CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF, ORF and RW2. Decoding and previews depend on format and operating-system support.
HEIC and RAW on WindowsMatching Windows codecs or thumbnail support may be needed to display previews and photo details.
HEIC and RAW on MacHEIC support is included through macOS image support. RAW previews and metadata use Apple’s image services; support depends on the macOS version and camera format.
OrganizationBrowse existing folders; group photos by date taken; sort by date, name or size; search by filename; adjust thumbnail size.
Viewer and metadataZoom and browse photos; view available date taken, dimensions, camera, lens, exposure and GPS details. Metadata availability depends on the source file.
Similar and duplicate photosFind exact copies and visual look-alikes, review suggested keep/remove choices, and move selected photos to Picman’s Trash.
File operationsBatch rename with a preview, move, copy, rotate supported formats, and delete. JPEG rotation updates its orientation without re-encoding the image. Not all recognized formats support rotation.
Trash and UndoPicman’s own Trash, separate from the operating system’s Trash or Recycle Bin; retention of 7, 30 or 60 days, or until emptied. Restore, Undo and Redo are available for supported file operations.

iPhone and Android Photo Importing

CapabilityRequirements and behavior
Supported desktop platformsPhone photo browsing and importing are available on Windows, Intel Mac and Apple Silicon Mac.
ConnectionUSB data cable. Keep the phone unlocked and connected while browsing or importing. Approve any phone data-access or computer permission prompt.
iPhoneUnlock the phone and tap Trust if prompted. On Mac, complete Finder pairing and allow Picman access when asked.
AndroidSelect File transfer (MTP), sometimes labeled File transfer / Android Auto, in the phone’s USB options. Photo transfer (PTP) may expose only camera photos and omit other albums.
Android folder coverageVersion 1.1.0 scans accessible photo folders beyond DCIM and Pictures. Hidden files and folders, thumbnail caches, hidden deleted-photo files and the top-level Android app-data folder are excluded.
USB visibility limitsOnly supported photo files exposed by the phone over USB are available. Cloud-only photos, secure/private albums and private app storage may not appear. Save or export those photos to a shared local folder first.
Import optionsChoose a destination and organize photos into a folder per month, a folder per day, or one folder. Import history can skip previously imported photos, even if the copies have been renamed or moved.
Keep or remove originalsOriginals stay on the phone unless you select “Delete them from the phone afterwards.” With that option enabled, Picman removes each original only after checking the copied file.
Phone photo operationsBrowse, view and import. Deletion is available when the phone permits it; Picman keeps a copy in its Trash before removing a photo. Restore recovers that copy to the computer, not back onto the phone. Import first to rename, rotate or move photos.
Mac connection troubleshootingIf another app holds the phone connection, close Photos, Image Capture and other phone-transfer apps, then reconnect the unlocked phone. For Android, confirm MTP remains selected; for iPhone, finish Trust and access prompts.

For step-by-step instructions, see Import Photos from iPhone and Android. In version 1.1.0, some import labels still say “PC” on Mac; they refer to the computer receiving the photos.
